LFW 2009

Lakme Fashion Week is the premiere event in India for what’s hot in
fashion. The show takes place twice a year to show off the coolest new
designs for all four seasons is under way and has set the graph high
for the world of fashion with new and creative designs that doesn’t
compromise wear ability. The show started on Friday and will end
today; saying good-bye to March in style.

Designers who showed off some creative designs included Vikram
Phadnis, Wendell Rodricks, Vivek Kumar, Atit Bhatt, Anand Bhushan,
Tanvi Kedia, Abdul Haldar, Ruchi Mehta, Niak, Jyoti Sharma, and
Archana Kochar. And of course there was Manish Malhotra who drew some
of Bollywood’s finest including Deepika Padukone, Asin, and Anushka
Sharma, Shahrukh Khan. They just couldn’t wait to get a taste of what
the designer had for this year.

Does Indian Fashion require celebrity showstoppers ?????

Fashion Weeks were originally buisness events wherein fashionable
outfits were displayed to seek buyers. The clothes were the
showstoppers, for they were original, arty and stylish.

With changing times, the scenario has changed there in Fashion Weeks
and more and more glamour is being drawn out on ramp by roping in
bollywood celebs. Models are surpassed by them and there popularity is
used to charm more media attention which means more buisness.

But, this is just a one-sided story and there are designers who
proudly stand apart. When designers Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna were
asked why they didn’t use any celebrity on the catwalk at the India
Fashion Week, Rahul Khanna replied: “Our clothes are our showstoppers.
It’s a business event, let’s keep it that!”

But in a world of glamour where media visibility is all about ‘what’s
hot’ and ‘what’s not’ is measured by roving video cameras present,
having a movie star in front of a celebrity-hungry media really make
bad business sense??

While a few other designers publicly at the fashion week were happily
posing for the cameras, hand in hand with their celebrity
showstoppers. And the media is often just a means to a (business) end.

Rina Dhaka, one of India’s most popular designers, at home and abroad
said that when a star wears the designers clothes it helps him to sell
the product to the customers.

And publicity is one thing that always tags along with celebrities on
the runway.

Off the stage, if you happen to see a crowd in the corner, you can be
sure that a Bollywood star or a beauty queen is at the centre posing
away in front of the flashbulbs.

The Indian fashion design industry’s overall production was just
around 2.7 billion rupees in 2007, with the majority of customers
being Indian. Sunil Sethi, president of the Fashion Design Council of
India said that if celebrities are walking,people identify the success
of the designer with that.

So is it any surprise that the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai,
which is usually chock-a-block with celebrities, receives more media
coverage than the India Fashion Week and the Delhi Fashion Week in the
Indian capital?

As Rina Dhaka points out: "Celebrities do make a difference!"

Bollywood divas at 54th Filmfare Awards

The eye-grabber of the evening doubtlessly was the Masakali girl Sonam Kapoor in a white flawless off-shoulder Chanel dress. The lady matched it up with black nail paints, simple make-up, and smoky eyes with dash of silver, and small butterfly-shaped hair jewels. And this is arguably the first time Chanel has sent their design to an actress in Bollywood.





Priyanka Chopra , who won the Best Actress figurine, was not really the winner in her style statement which is becoming a tad repetitive. Granted that the Alberta Ferrarti dress looked fetching, but even the royal blue, one-shouldered gown failed to accentuate Priyanka’s beauty because of her usual pin-up hair-do and long diamond earrings On the contrary, the Bachchan bahu Aishwarya Rai looked stunning in a Sabyasachi black and bronze sari. Adding the oomph factor was her sleeveless blouse in a vest kinda style and her hair rolled in a bun. Thank goodness the experiment suited her.







Asin , who won the Best Debutante award, looked different from the rest. She looked regal in her purple dress and her retro hairstyle. Genelia D'Souza was glamorous in shiny, figure-hugging black Cavalli gown and her fringes looked cute! Another lady in gown was chirpy Preity Zinta who opted for a black outfit with lace-work on the off-white bust of her gown and a matching clutch.





While most of the ladies were dolled up like princess, a few chose the ethnic Indian wear. It was Sari day for hotties like Bipasha Basu and Kareena Kapoor . Bipasha chose a beautiful Sabyasachi black sari and teamed it up with red coloured blouse and lot of bangles and green earrings. The white emphasizes elegance, and style diva Kareena managed it well in a white sari with intricate silver work. No points for guessing it were Manish Malhotra again for her.







Black is a safe bet, but the winner of Best Supporting actress Kangana Ranaut ’s black dress with chains to highlight the neckline can be described in one word - weird. Sushmita Sen chose black and looked effortlessly elegant, though the lady wasn’t her best. Prachi Desai ’s love for black is well known and she sported the same colored Raakesh Aggarwal gown with excitement, but to our utter disappointment.

TREND OF THE DAY: HOT CROSS BUNS

When in doubt, tie it up! Start with simple curls and gently pull it back to the nape of your neck in a messy bun. Wrap a few strands of hair around the band. To do a sweet cross bun, take 2 strands from each side of the hair and tuck into place. Leave a few tundrels to frame the face and even you can pull off this simple updo, just like Cate!

TREND OF THE DAY: DON'T BE TRANSLUCENT

A garment that appears perfectly opaque in the soft light of your bedroom may be perfectly obscene in bright sunlight. Be sure to check for opacity in different lights. Sheer is in, but keep it classy. Small doses of see-through are the best move. In this case, less is more.

Priyanka Chopra's magnificent footprints

The stifling belle will soon be headed to Italy to leave her foot impression at Salvatore Ferragamo Museum, Florence. She’s been invited by the museum people to give her foot imprints. The museum is dedicated to shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo , who’s often tagged as the ‘Shoemaker to the Stars’. Priyanka Chopra will be there in March to create a foot impression that will be made of wood or metal.

These wooden or metal lasts will be exhibited in the museum along with those of Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Madonna and Drew Barrymore.

It would be a matter of great honor for Priyanka as she is the first celeb from the Indian film industry to get an invitation from the elite shoe designer Ferragamo’s family. The museum, which shows the artist’s sketches, patents and designs, is also known as the Mecca of Shoe Fashion.

Piggy Chops will also be gifted with a pair of designer shoes exclusively made for her. The Fashion star is quoted as saying about her trip to Florence: “I am really excited.”

Riya Sen, is the hot and sizzling daughter of yesteryears actress and serene beauty Munmun Sen. She is all set to reveal more of her in ‘The Man‘, a fashion magazine. How? Freida Pinto was the eye catcher at Milan Fashion Week

Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto walked the ramp at Milan Fashion Week on Monday.

Freida, who’s been the latest Indian cover girl on international magazines, got to arrogance her stuff at the Dolce & Gabbana show at Milan Fashion Week - Autumn/Winter 2009 at the Metropole.

Dressed in a loose gown inflated with accessories, Freida glide the runway confidently at the show that had among the audiences the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova and the Italian Bond girl Caterina Murino.

Meanwhile, there are rumors that Freida might be signed on as the next ambassador of the beauty brand Estee Lauder. However, Estee Lauder spokeswoman and Freida’s manager have declined to comment on this. The 24-year-old ‘Slumdog’ starlet has already signed a Woody Allen film in which she gets to star with Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts and Anthony Hopkins. She is now thinking of moving to New York to work full time in Hollywood.

Sanjay Dutt sports a debonair look

After his tatty out look with salt and pepper fuzz for Rahul Dholakia's Lamha , Sanjay now sports a very different and stylish look with finely carved side locks for ‘Luck’. The side locks have three triangles opposite each other. Aalim has designed the new hairstyle.

The film’s cast and crew left for a ten-day schedule to Cape Town from where they will proceed to Bangkok for the next schedule. Sanjay is happy with his new "deadly" look. " Soham is a very talented director and he has a creative outlook. We both discussed the look and I am very happy that Aalim has styled me exactly as we foresee," Sanjay said.



Aalim said, "This is one of Sanjay's most daring and dashing looks! It's a very different side lock with three triangles opposite each other. Sanjay can carry off anything larger than life...his aura is really huge! He is looking really cool and will set a new trend with his facial hair."

Soham said that he wanted a look for Sanjay Dutt, which has never worn before. "I designed a couple of looks on Photoshop and Sanjay suggested a particular style. Aalim took it to a different level with his international styling experience. He (Sanjay) is the only actor who can carry this style as he has an attitude that no one has," he said.

Dhilin Mehta is producing the film under the banner Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd. It marks the debut of Shruti Haasan , daughter of Kamal Haasan and stars Imran Khan , Mithun Chakraborty and Danny.

Freida Pinto on Milan Fahion week

Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto walked the ramp at Milan Fashion Week on Monday.

Freida, who’s been the latest Indian covergirl on international magazines, got to strut her stuff at the Dolce & Gabbana show at Milan Fashion Week - Autumn/Winter 2009 at the Metropole.

Dressed in a loose gown embellished with accessories, Freida sashayed the runway confidently at the show that had among the audiences the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova and the Italian Bond girl Caterina Murino.











Meanwhile, there are rumours that Freida might be signed on as the next ambassador of the beauty brand Estee Lauder.

However, Estee Lauder spokeswoman and Freida’s manager have declined to comment on this.

The 24-year-old ‘Slumdog’ starlet has already signed a Woody Allen film in which she gets to star with Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts and Anthony Hopkins. She is now thinking of moving to New York to work full time in Hollywood.

Denim has the blues. But lucky for us, jean depression doesn't last long! It's reached the darkest time and now it's time to "lighten" up. Light wash denim jeans, skirts, and even cropped jackets are making their over-due return to the fashion world. Jeans have been every color in the rainbow over the last decade. It has even seen some creative destruction.

Yes, it does sound a lil circa 1990, the days of Supermodels, Spandex, and the Spice Girls. And the translation to 2009 in fashion has many parallels--- Supermodel icons, such as, Kate, Tyra, and Heidi are still making headlines. Spandex is now the leggings that are paired with everything from jean shorts to dresses. The Spice Girls are still prevalent in the Fashion Icon that is Victoria Beckham. She influenced fashion in the 90's and continues to inspire today!

Celebrities are loving the trend, from Ashley Tisdale to J.Lo, every body type can rock these faded beauties. From super skinny to wide leg, this trend has "bleached" out to suit every fashionista's favorite jeans. The key is to incorporate it into your individual style. Trans-fashion is the ability to take one standard piece that is typically found in every woman's closet and transition it into more than one outfit.
