365 DAYS OF STYLE: DAY 7

DAY 7: PRIM & PROPER. All fashion trends are cyclical, and in recent years have gradually modernised the looks of the 20th Century and planted them firmly in the 21st. And so too it is with men's hair trends in 2010: it's out with the new, and in with the old. Or at least an old hair style with a new twist.

2010 sees men's hair styles fall into two distinct categories: school boy and rocker. But while the rocker look is certainly a 20th Century creation, the resulting hair style finds its roots (if you'll pardon the pun) distinctly in 19th Century Britain. And so it is in 2010; while the odd 2010 runway collection featured something akin to a grunge revival, the majority of us will live out 2010 with a refined, classically inspired hair cut.

MALE STYLE MANIFESTO

When people in men's fashion talk about change, they usually talk about little things. Fits, fabrics, finishes — you know, little things that, depending on whether you are familiar with the oeuvre of Martin Margiela, may or may not matter to you all that much. But the kind of change we're talking about here, it's something different. Because in case you haven't noticed, the world as we know it is ending — politically, culturally, and, oh yes, economically — and a new one is aborning. One that demands the kind of ballsy style that was familiar to our grandfathers but lost for a generation; one that calls for renewed efforts to make a statement and get the details just right; one that requires that we dress every day as if we were going to get hired or fired or handpicked from obscurity to become a vice-presidential candidate, because, hell, that's just the kind of world we're living in now.

Fashion has always been a state of mind — an attitude that expresses itself in the details of how a man gets dressed — and with the ground shifting daily, it's time for a change of mind. It's time to embrace a new ideal, a new approach to dressing, and a few guidelines (nine of 'em) that will deliver us from the wilderness, our senses of self and style stronger than ever. Let's get started.

FASHION COMMANDMENTS:

1: THOU SHALL SUIT YOURSELF.

The suit's got to fit. You'd think that a lot of men would know this, but judging by how a lot of American men choose to wear their suits, you'd be wrong. Quick test: The jacket should sit close enough on the body that you can just barely slide your hand inside beneath the breast pocket. If you can slide in a fist, it's at least a size too big.

2: WHEN IN DOUBT DOUBLE TAKE.

Respect the tie. Tuck in the shirt. Button the jacket. Get it right, all the time, every day, and for chrissakes, look in the mirror before you leave the house.

3: ALWAYS REMAIN SIMPLY STATED.

Make a statement with something. (Perhaps your socks.)

Something on your person should always make a statement, and that statement should preferably be "Go to hell." Say it with socks, with a tie, or with a great pair of pants, and say it often.

4: DEFINITELY GO OFF THE CUFF.
Mad Men killed the pocket square. Focus instead on showing just the right amount of shirt cuff (a half to one inch). This and a good watch or cuff links are all the flash you need.

5: KNOW THAT BLUE THE NEW HUE.

Navy blue, not black.We know black is easy, but navy blue is easier, more versatile, and looks better against every skin type. Plus, it doesn't look brown under fluorescent lights. (Black does.)

6: PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

Patterns: Mix. Don't match. It's only when you contrast the scale, texture, or color of different patterns that such combinations work.

7: MAKE THE COMMITMENT.

If you wear a tuxedo, wear a tuxedo.That means bow tie, cummerbund, and peak lapel. Everything else is negotiable, even the shoes.

8: THOU SHALL HAVE A LOOK THAT KILLS.

A great jacket lets you get away with anything. It elevates everything else you're wearing and opens all kinds of doors. Which is why you should always have one with you.

9: THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR SLACKERS.

This is how long your trousers should be. The length of your trousers is everything. A half inch too long and you're instantly disreputable; a half inch too short and you're laughable. A one-inch kink in the front crease and you, my friend, are golden.

10: A NOSE KNOWS BEST.

When it comes to cologne, a mist is better than a musk. Identify your signature scent and know what works with your body's chemistry. Are you a woodsy? floral? clean? or spicy guy? Not sure what will work, next time you are at the department store, take your time to stop and smell the COLOGNES and ask for trials.  

MEN'S FASHION: LITTLE BOY BLUE

Dive into Spring’s coolest hue—- BLUE. Whether you are hangin’ on “Moon Beach” with Louis Vuitton (below) or workin’ it out in Bottega Venetta (bottom), one thing is for sure you are sure to be singin’ a new blues tune. From recycled cotton tees in cerulean to a sharp synthetic suit in navy, it’s more than just denim that is the fabric of choice. So, dump out your crayon box, we are fascinated by every shade– periwinkle, midnight, pacific, and even cornflower. Who knew that our favorite primary had so many unique names!



From the cool ocean water to the beautiful sky above, this season the designers were inspired by nature. As the world turns eco-friendly, green isn’t the only pigment that will bring you back down to earth. But how do you make sure that you don’t jump off the deep end when it comes to sportin’ this royal shade?

Peaceful and serene, these “blue” pieces can be preppy, sporty, and ultra-chic when partnered with the right proportion of neutrals. Ralph Lauren stayed classic while Michael Kors got a little carried away- blotchy blue dye on bleached denim is a bit washed out! D&G took a note from Elvis and kicked off their ensembles with blue suede shoes inspired by Converse. Ted Baker defined tradition with the navy blazer over a pristine turquiose dress shirt, while Cavalli was all about Blue Hawaii- floral printed fabrics.

Just like in nature, it’s all about a feng shui-like balance. Checkers to stripes to argyles, bold prints are making waves this spring too. The right combination of these patterns and solids can determine if you sink or swim. These transitional pieces will have you ready for summer too- even if you are surfin’ the beaches of Maui or basking in the dry desert of Las Vegas– shorts that can be worn wet or dry are just plain- HOT!

Even Hollywood’s hottest leading men are dye-ing to give this trend a try. Whether they are having a casual day out with the boys or struttin their stuff on the red carpet- from Adrian Grenier to Brad to Kanye, each of these hotties knows how to give a new meaning to “rhythm and blues”. Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts to help you find the right amount of blue for you!

RECESSIONISTA: MEN-- THE DRESS SHIRT

Alright guys, it's your turn. Whether you are the metro-male, the bad boy or the 'guy's guy'-- a fitted dress shirt is alot more versatile than paired with your Hugo Boss suit. Stripes, plaids, or solids can transform right before your eyes with pieces you already have in your closet. Put your wallet down and take a new look at your favorite dress shirts.

Pinching pennies without compromising current fashion trends-- is it possible? The answer is yes. The fashion movement is called "Trans-fashion". It's the ability to manipulate one item that your currently have one of or multiples of and wear it in a new way that you might not have even thought of before. An important trend for men in '09 is the European fitted and extremely tailored look. Warning, only go for fitted if your body worships the treadmill daily. Stick with a slightly less severe tailored shirt if your body isn't beach-ready. (Don't worry you have some time!)

And just because I love the men in my life, . . .Here's one more tip, aside from the typical dress shirt, tie, and blazer, why not skip the first 2 buttons on the dress shirt, toss out the tie, and cozy up to the idea of a cardigan. Not talking about Mister Rogers' favorite thing to put on in his neighborhood, but a varsity sweater can be sophisticated without aging you a bit!
